Welcome to The Totnes & District Community Strategy Group

index6

Can you spare some time to help improve life in Totnes?

Do you have a project idea which would benefit the community?

Are you part of a group already working on a community project

in Totnes?

If so, we would like to hear from you.

The Totnes and District Community Strategy Group is a registered charity set up to develop and encourage the delivery of the Community Plan, published in 2005 (to read the Plan in full, please click on Community Plan).

We aim to improve the economic and social wellbeing of the town by bringing people together – working with community groups, encouraging and supporting projects, seeking funding etc, and working closely with the Town Council and statutory agencies. We are coordinated by a group of Trustees (see About Us), and operate through a series of Forums and Project Groups

Previous Strategy Group projects have included establishing the Totnes Festival and the Friday Night Youth nights at the Leisure Centre.

Our Trustees are determined we should not be just a talking shop. We need to network across the community, take our priorities from local people, work with and support the statutory agencies wherever possible, and focus on practical and viable action. We can only be successful if enough local people pull together to make projects they care about a reality.

During 2009, we have:

  • supported the opening of a new Youth Group at Steamer Quay.  The additional Councillor funding from Cllr Paula Black has enabled these youth facilities to be extended to a younger age group on a Saturday;
  • continued to work on Planning issues, in conjunction with Totnes Town Council, Dartington Parish Council and others. We were instrumental in approaching the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, which culminated in South Hams District Council engaging the Foundation to undertake a series of Planning Days across the whole of the South Hams in June;
  • continued to coordinate responses to traffic issues via the Traffic and Transport Forum, including contributing to the Transition Town Totnes Energy Descent Plan. Towards the year end, efforts to try to develop a Transport Strategy for the town, working with the relevant authorities, have been initiated.

Our chair, Jill Tomalin, is a member of the Greater Dartmoor Local Enterprise Action Fund (GDLEAF) which has funds of £1.8M to allocate to local projects in the area.

Information on the DPD and a report on discussions with Baltic Wharf developers TQ9 can be found in The Housing and Built Environment section of this website or by clicking on Forums
