About Us

The Totnes & District Community Strategy Group was set up in 2001 as part of the Government’s Market and Coastal Towns Initiative which called for community involvement in a nationwide regeneration programme.

Over four years, community consultation took place involving over 500 representatives from local associations, local government and a wide range of community agencies and organisations.  Groups were established to investigate and develop the following priority regeneration areas defined by the consultation:

Affordable Homes
Business and Employment
Youth Services
Conservation and Heritage
Local Transport
Local Sustainability
Arts and Culture

The results of their efforts were distilled into the Totnes & District Community Plan, published in 2005, which laid down an overall community action strategy for economic, social and environmental development.

In 2006, a Plan Review was published in which consultants examined all potential projects detailed in the Community Plan and laid down a methodology to take them forward.

Our Organisation

The Community Strategy Group is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. We have a coordinating group of Trustees which meets six times a year, with places reserved for Town (2), District (2) and County Councillors (1). There are then a number of network groups in areas such as Traffic and Transport, and Housing and the Built Environment, whose members share common interests. Additionally, we can set up project teams to work on specific projects.

One third of Trustees are put up for election each year at the AGM, which usually takes place in September.

The current Trustees are:

Jacqi Hodgson (Company Secretary)
Sue Holmes
Tom Maugham
Jill Tomalin (Chair)

Cllr. Robert Vint           South Hams District Council
Paul Wesley
Cllr. Judy Westacott                   Totnes Town Council & South Hams District Council
